Brook trout ("Bäckröding ") Overview


Brook trout - Salvelinus fontinalis

Brook trout thrive in cold, oxygen-rich streams and small creeks.
Have a marbled or flamfläckig back, otherwise it has the usual characteristics of the char as white fenkanter.
They eat everything from fish, worms and insects.

Population

The species were released in Sweden and Europe during the late 1800s. Unlike example. Arctic char thrive as brook trout well in Southern Sweden, the water can be a bit warmer, provided that the oxygen content is high.

Size and growth

At 2 to 4 years will brook trout usually mature for spawning. It plays in the fall and then turn to running / flowing streams with gravel bottoms.
It usually grows rapidly, however, so are rarely over a kilo. Life: Approx 5 years.

Swedish record: 2.6 kg.
