Roach ("Mört") Overview


Roach - Rutilus rutilus

Roach is normally a small fish that are mostly not more than about 20 cm long, but can grow up to 50 cm. It weighs usually no more than half a kilo. The body has a bluish color silvertonad released in white at the stomach.

Population

The range of roaches extends throughout Europe in addition to the area around the Mediterranean, and also east into Siberia.

In Sweden, it is found all over the country.

Size and growth

Roach spawn in May and June and can lay up to 100,000 eggs, which hatch after 4-10 days. Roach adapt to local conditions and eating parts of plants such as moss and algae in deeper water or small molluscs, insect larvae and insects that it catches on the water surface. Among roach natural enemies are perch and pike. Roach live about 25 years.
