Mjälasjöarna is located in an area where large bodies of water moved at the end of the ice age. For some time, a large ice river is said to have washed sand from Färgenissjön. In the area of Mjälasjöarna, the water flowed more slowly, mälä and sand then sank to the bottom in a glacial lake that was significantly larger than the current lakes in the area. This is the explanation why there is a lot of sand, loam and flour in the area of Mjälahult.
The largest part of the lake area is a total of around 130 hectares and is located in the parish of Torup.
