The Pentäsjoki water system begins in the streams that carry water to Lake Pentäsjärvi in the southwestern part of Pajala municipality. It is accessible by boat for a mile. The stream system passes several smaller villages on its way to the Torne River and grows in size as more watercourses connect.
Shortly after the stream crosses the border with Övertorneå municipality, it joins the Aapuajoki, which has a trout population that is worth protecting. There are several longer rapids along the route where the availability of grayling is often good. Between the rapids there are calmer rapids where you can fish for alert fish or catch larger pike and sometimes perch. In Neistenkangas/Pello, the Pentäsjoki finally flows into the Torne River, where the migrating sea trout begin their journey up the stream. In Pentäsjoki you can fish for Grayling, Trout, Pike, Perch etc.
You fish from banks with old forest, bogs, meadows and heath. The forest is home to animals such as moose, reindeer, lynx and bear. Along the eastern side of Pentäsjoki there is a partially boarded snowmobile/hiking trail with barbecue huts and an overnight cabin with sauna. Older bridges and cairns built for rafting purposes are still there today. There are roads adjacent to the stream, but if you want to get to the more remote parts, you can expect to hike a bit.
Fishing is free for children under 15 years old.
The fishing rules are the same for both children and adults.
The purpose of the Pentäsjoki fishing area association is to coordinate the conduct of fishing and to promote the common interests of fishing right holders, taking into account the regulations that apply to the practice of fishing, and to allow fishing to the public. The association was founded in 2016.
