The rough big trout's home in the wilderness.
Welcome to one of the country's few flowing waterways with long-migrating rough wild trout.
Dammån in Jämtland is a complete fishing area with lake-stream-lake and mountain fishing, a fishing trail in untouched wilderness.
Dammån has its source flows up by the Norwegian border and Anarisfjällen.
Every year between 1,200 trout pass the fish ladder in Ågårdarna, but hundreds of trout are caught below the control and are not included in the count.
1982 was a record year, with 1024 trout counted.
The maximum weights are between 6-8kg, while the average weight is just under 2kg.
As early as May, the trout begin their spawning migration from Storsjön.
The game takes place at the end of September and beginning of October.
Dammån's fisheries conservation work
To ensure the regrowth of the long-migrating wild trout, the fisheries management area invests in the planting of two-summer trout fry.
The breeding fish are caught in Dammån at Höglekardalen with a land seine.
The fertilized roe are then put into fish farming for hatching and rearing.
The fisheries conservation work also includes biotope conservation measures in Dammån, control of pike and mink, as well as a ban on fishing with worms and a substantial investment in fisheries supervision.
Sport fishing in Dammån is mainly aimed at trout and grayling.
Occasional Canadian trout and whitefish can migrate up from Storsjön to the lower part of Dammån.
A dry aquarium that shows the biological life of the trout in Dammån has been available to view by the fish ladder since the summer of 1994.
